Who produces olive oil?

Olive oil from Spain

The leading producer

With about 40% of world production, Spain is by far the world's leading olive oil producer, well ahead of Tunisia and Italy, which each account for around 10%. Its climate is particularly favourable and its olive growing is developed, modern and productive. Yet Spain has only about 23% of the world's olive-growing area: 2.7 million hectares out of 11.7 million.

The leading exporter

Spain exports over 900000 tonnes of olive oil a year on average. In France, nearly 70% of imported olive oil comes from Spain: 68% in 2024, according to FranceAgriMer. And France imports almost all the oil it consumes, around 115000 tonnes a year, against domestic production of barely 6000 tonnes.

A producer of high-quality oils

Beyond volume, centuries of experience and the diversity of its terroirs and varieties have also made Spain a producer of some of the world's finest extra virgin olive oils. In the 2025 Evooleum ranking, five of the world's ten best extra virgin olive oils are Spanish.

Brands and origins

Brands often give a misleading picture of where oils come from. A lot of Spanish olive oil is sold under brands with French or Italian names, such as Puget, Maille and Carapelli. Carapelli, the leading brand by volume in Italy, is owned by Deoleo, one of Spain's largest olive oil production and distribution groups.
